Africa Nouveau, a musical and cultural festival that replaces the Blankets & Wine Festival
After 6 years and 58 editions of showcasing Africa’s most remarkable and emerging bands, Blankets & Wine now presents Africa Nouveau, a 2-day festival designed to showcase the most innovative, cutting-edge, trend setting artists on September 5th and 6th 2015, at the Ngong Racecourse Nairobi, starting from noon daily.
The concept of carrying blankets/shukas, sitting on some grounds with a bottle of wine with great music on a stage was a very well thought out one by Muthoni Ndonga who is the brains behind Blankets & Wine. It wasn’t exactly a new concept as a lot of festivals in the west like the Womad are held in an open field with folks combining a picnic experience with their friends and family as great artists perform on a stage making it a full experience for music lovers.
As soon as the concept of Blankets & Wine took root and became a monthly event that music lovers, and later, show offs, looked forward to, a lot started going sideways spoiling the very experience that Muthoni and her team had set out to achieve. Copy cats were also looming and soon we had similar concepts albeit with fancy names that sought to compete for the same crowd that had come to love and religiously attend all the B&W concerts.
I thank them for giving us music lovers an opportunity to watch artists like Zahara, Dwele, Mafikizolo, Lira, Thandiswa Mazwai, Mi Casa and many others live on stage.
Change is the only constant in life and its great to see that Muthoni did not let her vision die instead, choosing to re-invent B&W to a bigger and more artistic concept that seeks to celebrate all forms of African art from the visual to the performance as well as the culture with the Africa Nouveau Festival.
Africa Nouveau Festival will expand your imagination by introducing you to the most progressive Musicians, Visual and Digital artists, DJ/Producers, Fashion designers, Foodies and Fashionistas from all over Africa and its Diaspora!
Over the course of the two days, there will be live music scheduled on two stages, live art installations, concept food creation and spectacular DJ sets among others.
